A new innovation in cruising is on the horizon. Royal Caribbean is building a new class of ship code named "Genisis" that will redefine how people view cruise ships and will reinvent the experience of cruising. The latest "World's Largest Cruiseship" from Royal Caribbean is called the Oasis of the Seas. The ship will encompass 7 different "neighborhoods" all offering an unique experience including and an outdoor Central Park in the middle of the ship and accommodations never seen before on a cruise ship including two tier loft staterooms. Information on three of the ship's neighborhoods was released to the public by Royal Caribbean last month and information on the other four neighborhoods will be available soon. In addition to the Central Park, Oasis of the Seas will have an outdoor boardwalk area towards the back of the ship including eateries, retail outlets and an orginal handcrafted carousel in a carnival type atmosphere. Off the Boardwalk, the first amphitheater at sea, AquaTheater, will celebrate water with the largest freshwater pool found on a ship offering a full spectrum of activities and performances for guests. Created to offer two unique experiences, AquaTheater will allow guests to swim in the theater’s magnificent kidney-shaped pool, relax on sun loungers located on tiered platforms surrounding the pool, and even take SCUBA lessons in the afternoon. At night, it will deliver a complete sensory experience playing on the element of surprise as audience members witness the venue come alive with heart-pounding theatrical performances featuring dramatic acrobatics, synchronized swimming, water ballet, and professional high-diving, as well as elaborate fountain shows synchronized to music and lights. Other surprises include two 43-foot rock-climbing walls on either side of the AquaTheater and the first zip-line at sea suspended nine decks above Boardwalk. Oasis of the Seas will also have a Royal Promenade, a trademark of RCCL's Vision and Freedom class ships, but twice as wide than the Royal Promenade on previous ships. The Royal Promenade resembles a huge linear indoor mall complete with shops, cafes and bars. Royal Caribbean is due to annouce information on the remaining 4 neighborhoods on the Oasis of the Seas at the end of August. I am totally floored by the Oasis of the Seas. I first heard about RCCL's Genisis Class cruise project a year ago. A new generation of cruise ships holding 5400 passengers. My first thought was, why so big and why so many people. My Cruise Planners agent friend Tony Lostumbo said he said the same thing 15 years ago when first current mega ships were proposed. The latest of RCCL's mega-ships: Freedom Class is so popular that the ships often sell out months in advance especially around family holidays. RCCL obviously can see the future of cruising and I must say they see a future where you will cruise in style on a ship like no other I ever seen anywhere in the world. Oasis of the Seas has so many innovations the ships will change the face of cruising and force all other cruise lines to rethink their current drawings for ships in the planning process. I admire RCCL's commitement to innovation and excellene and courage to invest so much time, money and effort on a ship that will revolutionize the industry. Hence the current Oasis of the Seas marketing program that is a solid 18 months before the ship is launched. RCCL knows the ship is that good and they are proud and bascially telling the competition to attempt to follow in their footsteps. I now understand why Cruise Planners agents like myself are the top travel agent (President's Award Winner in 2007) for Royal Caribbean. Our network of savvy home-based agents totally understand just how good RCCL is at building ships and pleasing customers. Oasis of the Seas will put RCCL firmly at the forefront of the cruising industry.
Oasis of the Seas launches in December 2009 but stateroom bookings go on sale to the general public September 3, 2008. The grand ship will begin her inaugural season with 19 consecutive seven-night sailings to the Eastern Caribbean, with ports of call at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Philipsburg, St. Marteen; and Nassau, Bahamas from her home port of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Starting May 1, 2010, Oasis of the Seas will alternate its Eastern Caribbean itinerary with the Western Caribbean itinerary, which will call at Labadee, Royal Caribbean’s private beach destination in Haiti; the new port of Falmouth, Jamaica; and Cozumel, Mexico. Please email us at dhartman@cruiseplanners.com to request an early reservation that will be submitted when Oasis of the Seas goes on sale in early September. There will be an early booking period for RCCL Crown and Anchor Society Members. See the latest entries of my web blog for details.
